Duane R. Metcalf Memorial Scholarship
My dad, Duane R. Metcalf was an amazing man.  He could build anything out of
almost nothing.  He never went to college, and yet he possessed more knowledge
than anyone I've ever known.  He demonstrated a certain aptitude and genius for all
things mechanical from an early age.  When he was 5 years old he was disqualified
from a squirrel house building contest because the judges decided he could not have
built his entry without adult assistance.  Experiences such as this, coupled with his
depression era upbringing gave him a no compromise attitude that he carried with him
his entire life.  Still, he would bend over backward to help a stranger, so long as they
were willing to meet him halfway.  My dad was always of the "teach a man to fish..."
school.
Perhaps the crown jewel of Pahoa Auto Parts, Inc.'s contribution to society in the
shadow of the volcano is the Duane R. Metcalf memorial Scholarship.  Funded
primarily by the sale of Pahoa Auto Parts t-shirts, this scholarship has been available
to the graduating seniors of Pahoa area Highs School since 2001.  Originally a one
time only $750.00 scholarship, in 2007 it was decided that the recipient would receive
greater benefit if the scholarship was raised to $1000.00 per year for up to 4 years.
The Scholarship
Selection Committee
Each year, for the last several years, Pahoa Auto Parts,
Inc. has recieved a number of applications from Pahoa
area High School seniors who wish to continue their
education program. In order to ensure impartial selection
of scholarship recipients, all applications received  by the
application deadline are forwarded to the scholarship
selection committee. (pictured at right)  One member of
our committee a former Pahoa High graduate and later a
graduate of the University of North Alabama is my sister.
The other member, my brother  attended the University of
Alaska at Anchorage and received his teaching degree.
These two individuals sort through the various academic
records, civic achievements, personal statements, and
yes, the jokes, and select our DRMM Scholarship
recipient.  It is a difficult task.  I do not envy them.  But
they have come through year after year.  And so I
applaud their efforts as much as I applaud the
achievements of those graduating seniors who apply for
the scholarship.
These two do not usually hang out at Pahoa
Auto parts.  But you may see them there
from time to time.
